Soon we are adding in a new feature that will allow designers to upload a image file that shows the work done for a project from DesignQuote. Designers will be able to add a brief description along with their screenshot or photo.

We will also allow the client to leave a comment/testimonial about the project as well as a link to the site the project relates to. Designers will be able to add a link back to their homepage and to the project.

We will link this portfolio page from the original RFP page (we will remove the budget info first).

We will be selecting certain portfolios to be featured on our home page.

New one slot web design leads and email alerts

Today a DesignQuote designer submitted the following question. I realized that many of our designers may have been wondering the same thing, so I decided to post the QandA here.

Question:
I have noticed something strange happening for the last couple of weeks. I get an email alert for a job and underneath the original email is a list of "More recently approved projects:" and there is a list of RFQ's. They are all in numerical order and usually they are all for the same price range and in each case, they are only looking for a single bid. I never get an individual email reporting those RFQ's. I've been with DQ for several years and I've never seen anybody ever ask for a single quote. So here are my questions.

1. Why am I not receiving emails for those single bid requests?
2. Are those jobs real, or are you just getting spammed with fake jobs?

They seem fake because of their similarity to each other and the fact that I don't receive email alerts for them. Please advise.

Response:
The single slot leads are from a new web-design-lead-provider we have partnered with. We are testing routing some of their lead inventory through DesignQuote. They limit leads to 5 designers. They are giving four slots to their existing customers (designers) and then giving one slot to DesignQuote.

- The reason you do not usually receive an email alert about those leads (and probably many other leads in your price range) is because of the way our email alerts work. When a lead is approved, the alert system sends alert emails in groups of 200 emails every 5 minutes. The order we send emails is based on how many credits are in your account - whoever has the most credits gets the first email, the next highest gets the second, etc. ( as described on the alerts page http://www.designquote.net/provider/set_services.cfm )
　
You currently have 14 credit(s). This puts you at number 232 on the email notification list. Which means that 231 designers have 14 or more credits in their account and receive emails before you. There are currently about 2500 designers who have specified instant alerts for projects over $1000 - so when we post a $1k+ project the system queues up about 2500 emails to be sent. We send the first 250 emails immediately then wait 5 minutes (to give the mail processor time to process those 250 emails) and then we check the RFP slots. If the project has not sold out, we send the next 250 emails, wait 5 minutes and check again until the project sells out or everyone has been emailed.

Once a design project sells out all the remaining emails are cleared from the queue and those designers are never notified about the project. So the reason your not receiving alerts for these projects is because the project sells out before it gets to you name in the alert queue.

The clients are actually getting 5 bids, 1 from DQ and the other four from non-DQ designers that get leads from our partner. In order to make our alert emails more informative, we add in a list of other projects with similar budgets under "More recently approved projects:" - The partner RFP numbers are in numerical order because we process them in batches as they come in, one after another and they get sequential RFP IDs.

The partner prequalifies the leads checking their phone and email so they get approved and posted as soon as we receive them. So if several partner leads get approved they are queued and might appear under "More recently approved projects:" before the alerts are even actually sent for those specific projects. The mail-bot checks all open projects every time it sends a batch of emails.

We are currently beta testing this partnership it will change in the future. We just started the partnership 3 weeks ago (the first week of November) which is why you just started seeing the one slot leads. We are collecting data and feedback from our designers to make sure the quality of the leads we get from our new partner meet the quality standards of our regular leads.

We don't have enough data to determine that yet but we should know in a few weeks. If the quality of the leads is good enough, we will expand our partnership and increase the number of slots per lead for DesignQuote designers. The leads would still be limited to 5, but we may divide them up so DQ gets 3 slots and the partners designers get the remaining 2, as opposed to the one single slot we get now.

DesignQuote was designed by a web design company with over 12 years in business. We determine the validity of a lead (whether or not its bogus) based on the same criteria we use from a customer that contacs us directly.

When we deal with a client we often meet or speak with them and the create a ballpark proposal, sometimes we never hear form them again. This is usually because they picked a different firm and do not want to have to tell us the bad news, so they just avoid it. Other times we will spend hours creating proposals only to have the client come back and say they lost the funding, or something else came up and they have to put the project on hold. This is a normal part of business, and it doesn not mean that those clients were bogus clients.

DesignQuote is different from most sites in that we allow you to pick and choose the leads you want instead of forcing you to take every lead. We have guidelines that determine if a lead is bogus, and if a lead is found to be bogus you will receive your credits back.

Designquote sells sales leads. Leads are NOT guaranteed jobs, they are sales leads and you are competing with other designers and dealing with "potential" clients who may or may not end up purchasing services.

We contact the client multiple times and verify their email and phone number and ensure they are actually looking for a designer.

How validity is decided:

A lead is NOT Bogus if:
The client picks another provider outside of DesignQuote.
Reason: The lead is valid, the client was looking to hire a designer, all designers had an opportunity to contact the client and make the sale.

The client decided to put the project on hold, or decided they could no longer do the project for whatever reason.
Reason: Sometimes customers change their mind or have internal problems that prevent them from doing the project. They may contact you later if they decide to start the project again. Keep in contact with them and you may still get the contract.

The client received your bid or had some correspondence with you, then never contacted you again and chose another designer.
Reason: The client is usually talking to several other designers, during these contacts the client may pick a winner for the project and not notify you directly.

A lead is MAY BE Bogus if:

The client never responded to any contact you made with them. Reason: Sometimes customers change their mind or have internal problems that prevent them from doing the project. They may contact you later if they decide to start the project again. Keep in contact with them and you may still get the contract. If you suspect that the lead is bogus create a bogus report on your leads page.

A lead IS Bogus if:

The client never responded to any designers and does not close their project. Action: DesignQuote customer support will investigate the lead and try to contact the client and get the results of the project, if the client does not respond after several attempts the lead will be marked as bogus and all designers will get their credits back. If you suspect that the lead is bogus create a bogus report on your leads page.

Apples Estimates 250K IPhones Sold to Unlockers on Epicenter: "During the Q&A portion of Monday's Q4 earnings call, Apple's COO Timothy Cook made an interesting statement. Cook said he estimates that 250,000 of the nearly 1.4 million iPhones Apple has sold were 'bought with intention of unlocking.' That's almost 20 percent of all iPhones sold to date. Can Cook be serious? The admonition came while Cook was answering questions about the price cuts that happened mid quarter and their effect of iPhone sales.

Here's what he had to say: "We were very happy with the elasticity we saw. It enabled us to far surpass our expectation of hitting around a million units cumulatively by the end of the quarter. Some number of these [iPhones] were sold to people who had the intention to unlock. And while we don't know precisely how many people are doing that, our current guess is that there was probably 250,000 thousand of the 1.4 million that we sold, where people had bought them with the intention of doing that. Many of those happened after the price cut."

Apple’s 1.1.1 iPhone update is out, and while there’s a healthy list of new functionality and tweaks, all eyes are still on the unlock situation. After Apple’s warnings (which some took as threats) that hacked iPhones could potentially turn into expensive, slender bricks after the update process, owners of modded handsets scurried desperately to find ways to restore authenticity to their iPhones. Whether that’s necessary or not seems to vary; there are conflicting reports coming in from around the blogosphere as to if the 152.3mb update kills or not.

Gizmodo are saying that their iPhones have updated okay but that any third-party apps installed have disappeared from the launcher screen (although the programmes themselves are still believed to be in the flash memory); some of their readers, however, are finding their newly-updated (and previously hacked) iPhones are throwing up SIM errors. That’s the result iPhone Central’s Jonathan Seff has had - his hacked, unlocked iPhone is refusing to recognise the AT&T SIM (although the SIM itself will still work in other handsets). Hackint0sh are similarly putting out the warning that unlocked iPhones get relocked following the update, and won’t recognise the original SIM.

A version of AnySIM that is compatible with iPhones running software/firmware 1.1.1 has been released. In a nutshell, that means that iPhones running the new software release can be unlocked to run on carriers other than AT&T via an iPhone native application with a graphical interface.

A note from the iPhone/iTouch Dev Team reads:

“Please note that that version works only on VIRGIN 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 phones. We are working on a re-virginizer. DO NOT USE whether YOU HAVE ALREADY UNLOCKED WITH ANYSIM 1.0.”
In other words, whether you unlocked your iPhone while it was running software/firmware 1.0.2, do not use that version of AnySIM. that release is only for new iPhones that shipped with firmware/software 1.1.1 or iPhones that were upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 but never unlocked. We’ve received word that a “re-virginizer,” which will allow iPhones that were unlocked under software/firmware 1.1.1 to return to a default state from which they can be unlocked under 1.1.1. There is already an 18-step process that will unbrick iPhones that were unlocked under 1.0.2 thereupon upgraded

How to I report an inaccurate or fraudulent posting, or a client that doesn't respond to me?

If you email a bid and get no response that doesn't neccesarily mean a project is bogus. Wait and leave feedback on our feedback system (see below). If you get a bogus phone number and email and cannot reach the client at all, notify us immediately via lives upoort or create a support ticket and we will investigate. Otherwise use the:

NEW: Integrated feedback system.
Here is how the process works: Once you purchase a lead, it is added to your leads (under the "my leads" tab). After the bid closing date the client is notified and instructed to close the project. When a client closes the project, they enter the outcome of their decision, this is emailed to every designer that bid on the project. Once closed you are emailed and instructed to leave feedback for that lead.

As soon as a project closing date passes we email the client every night (and call them after 5 days) to ask them to close the project. If a client doesn't close a project within 10 days we close the project and set it as "under review" - you can then leave feedback.

When you leave feedback you can let us know if the client responded to you, if you won the project, or if the project was bogus. We now review all closed projects and if we find a lead was bogus we will refund your credits. Otherwise if we find the project was awarded, everyone who purchased the lead is notified of the outcome.

If you are a freelancer or have a design business then you already do pay for leads, either by printing business cards, buying ads, postcards, Pay-per-click ads, the yellow pages, a sign on a business...

Its all marketing cost and one way or another if your going to attract potential customers (eg leads) you are going to pay. After you add it all up, you will see the COA (Cost of acqusition) of a client is actually quite low compared with say Google ads, Magazine or Newspaper ads, or other traditional forms of advertising.

Most people build it into the cost of doing business.

1) Buy just the leads you want as low as 1 credit.

4) All bids are sealed, your not trying to lowball compeitors.
5) There are never more than 8 other designers bidding on a project.
6) The cost of client acquisition is much, much lower than PPC.

10) Clients that expect too much never get many if any bids!

This is a clip from a discussion email list. I thought these people brought up some good points but also had some misconceptions about DesignQuote. So I have made soem responses:

what kind of site allows an illustration budget of $100,
and in order to bid on that princely sum for an illustration
job-- the designer has to cough up $20 to $40--JUST TO BID! Criminey!

DQ: An illustration with a budget of $100 would cost 1 credit (eg $5) not $20-$40! We confirm every job and "recommend" budgets to clients that seem to be asking too much for too little, but in the end, we let the designers choose what to bid on. Most projects with budgets that small do not get any bids - this sends the message to the client 'your budget is too low!" We also allow for registered members to leave feedback about a project so they can tell a client if they think they are crazy :)

That's kinda what I was thinking too - I have to pay to bid on a
project?! That's ridiculous! But hey, if it works for you, then more
power to ya. However, it's not for me. Anybody have any other sites
(besides the notorious Elance) that could actually be a designers
friend?

DQ: you have to pay to bid on a project whether you think you do or not. If you bought business cards, ran an ad, built a website or did any other marketing or advertising you have paid to bid on a job. We aleviate that marketing work and let designers get right to design work.

Good points. Still, it seems rather steep pricing,
especially if you end up on a string of *not* getting the jobs. Hmm. . .
I can see your point, but it still doesn't sit well with me.

DQ: We started this site after being in the web design business for 10 years. Our lead acquisition cost were hovering around $2000 per contracted project with a closing rate of about 1/5.

We are in a competitve market, to get Google clicks cost anywhere from $2.50 - $5.50 per click.10 clicks to get a RFP ($40.00) then 9 out of 10 of those RFPs were not the right fit, too little money, wrong tech skillset, whatever - we would get about 1 decent lead out of 10. ($300-500)

We would land about 20% of the jobs (5 leads @ avg $400 = $2000.00 project acquisition cost) This is viable when you are working with 10k - 50k budgets. We were looking for a way to recoup some of this cost, we had tons of leads that were just too small for us or didn’t fit our progamming niche. -

We sell a $15,000 budget project for 6 credits ($30) - which is about 10 times less what it takes to get one using standard PPC!

I still think the fee is too stiff. Yes, $40 for any job
might be reasonable. However, as I understand it, the
higher the budget, the higher the bid fee--SO, that $40
fee appears to only allow you to bid up to a $500 or
so project.

DQ: $40 for any job is not how the pricing structure works.
A $250-$500 job cost 3 credits (eg $15)

Which you would typcially under bid some, to get the job.
You have to buy more 'credits' to bid for the larger
priced projects. I'm not saying it's not a good service.

Again, the buyer can't really lose. I am only pointing out,
like other sites, it does a disservice to Designers in my
view, as you could spend hundreds of dollars,
and not get any work.

DQ: Business is like that, anyone can spend hundreds of dollars and not get any work. I have run ads in magazines that cost well over $1200 and gotten about a $50 return. That’s the nature of the industry. If you spend hundreds of dollars, (lets say $100 which buys 25 credits) that would get you around 6 bids with budgets between $500 - $2500. If you bid on 6 jobs and do not get a single one of them, its more likely a problem with your proposal process. You have every opportunity to sell the client on your service. Any decent designers should be able to close the industry average of 20% for closing contracts. So lets say you only close 1 of those jobs, and it pays $1200. You spent $100 and landed a $1200 job - that’s a pretty nice ROI.

I understand the premise Fred.
I just think--too many of the low-priced jobs offered--
still encourages Designers to work for well below the
average marketplace fee for their talents.
It's not as friendly to Designers as it is to Buyers...
I get why you like it from a buyers point-of-view,
you can't lose! :^)

DQ: We don’t like low priced jobs either - that’s why we encourage designers not to bid on jobs they don’t want. Often a client posts a job for a very low price (we recommend they raise the budget but sometimes the refuse). Then after a week when no one is bidding on their project they raise their budget! Democracy and free market in action :)

If buyers don't pay, you get too many fishing expeditions, I've found.
They put it up for bid to find out what they have to pay for it, then spec their RFP and offer it through their usual channels.

DQ: We make it very clear to clients that they must be ready to begin work and have the funds to do so. We also confirm every project, most by phone, so we make sure the leads are legitimate before they are posted. If a client turns out to be phoney or doesn’t respond we investigate and find out what happened - if they are a bogud client all the designers get their credits refunded.

We've used www.guru.com with some success.
They've been around for quite a while now and do things
like handle escrow payments, etc.

DQ: We have considered doing escrow, however the cost involved would force us to charge for the service and get us in etween the business relationship of client and designer - the service is as cheap as it is because we don’t get involved with escrow and commissions and payments. We let you handle your business isntead of trying to get between you and the client. We are exploring some options, but things have been working very well so far.

(1) I will avoid exclamation points.
Use an exclamation point at the end of an exclamation like Wow! or Ouch! Don’t use it to gin up artificial excitement (Sale!). Exclamation points are the grammatical equivalent of shouting, and shouting causes headaches.

(2) I won’t say “make my logo bigger.” (might sing it though)
You like your logo. You want to see your logo. But to your prospects your logo is not yet relevant. If they notice it too soon they may turn the page. Your logo should be the tasteful last point of a well-crafted appeal.

(3) I won't spam.
And remember that what constitutes spam is in the eye of the beholder.

DesignQuote is now syndicated. If you would like to add some great content to your site, you can list DesignQuote jobs on your site giving your visitors fresh content that is updated several times every day!

If you use blogger or have a blog, you can add it by simply using our RSS feeds.

If you do not have an easy way to add an RSS Feed then you can use this simple PHP script.

It works the same as DesignQuote.net - Clients post PHP jobs and projects and programmers can browse the leads and purchase the ones they want to bid on. No membership fees or commissions!

Design quote has dropped the credit cost on 3 of our budget levels.

Projects with budgets of $5000 - 7500 are now only 5 credits instead of 6
Projects $15,000 - $30,000 are now only 6 credits instead of 7
Projects $30,000+ are now only 7 credits instead of 8.

We are also about to launch our feedback system. It is in final testing this week!
